Title: Website design checklist

A quick checklist before you go live with any new website!

I always try and use this checklist just before going live with a website to ensure the basics have been covered. The list takes into consideration the website itself and not the technical aspects, we will talk about them later. Please feel free to expand on the list by adding your comments below!

The checlist

  • Does the homepage sum up what you do instantly?
  • Are your contact details clearly visible and easy to read?
  • Is the first page of your website quick to download, even on dial up?
  • Text on your website should be clear and easy to read using a standard font unless in graphics.
  • Can users easily navigate to the other pages of your website without having to figure out complex menu systems and dropdowns?
  • Have you got a site map detailing all relevant pages within your website? Is this sitemap upload to googles sitemap engine?
  • Is the content important to the customer? If not why is it on the web site?
  • Is there any duplicate content on the website? If so why is it duplicated?
  • Minimise the use of “click here” instead use descriptive text for your links.
  • Do you use strong “call to actions”? Ensure the user has something to do as soon as they come onto your homepage – making it easy for them to stay on your website.
  • Try to make any registration process on your website only 1 or 2 stages long, if not the user may get frustrated and leave the website.
  • Check through your website for broken links, spelling – ensuring all the graphics work correctly, videos loads up and all processes do not cause errors.
  • Title each individual page with reference to its content, giving visitors a clear indication of what the content is about.

This should give you a good starting base for checking your website out. Enjoy!
