Question: XP or VISTA

Hi guys, I currently have XP Pro and have no qualms with the system,  but also received when I purchased my laptop a VISTA Business upgrade, which I keep considering to change over. My PC is an acer Ferrari AMD Turon64 and in order not to loose any information, I would have to buy an external hard drive to store every thing before changing over, so as not to loose any thing. I would be interested in hearing if any one has done this and if they think the change over was worth while and what problems did they encounter. My sons keep saying 'if it aint broken don't fix it'.

Ken,

We have dealt with a number of issues for customers running Windows Vista Business, both software & hardware.

If you like a 'pretty' screen and desktop environment to work within then vista is for you, however if it's functionality you are looking for then our opinion is to stick with XP.

Vista is new and not very stable, meaning that Microsoft have lots of problems with it, the same happened when XP was first released.

Vista is also not compatiable with a lot of software & hardware as yet, which may effect any programs you currently have.

The change over really wouldn't be worthwile in our opinion, stick with XP Pro, it's the Operating System worthy of your Acer.

Hope this help.

Hi,

Stick with XP at least until Vista SP2 has been tried & tested. I know of several colleagues/friends who've installed Vista & rued the day they did.

Thank you the Repair Team and Eddie for your replies,  what you both have said is what other people have said to me.  I expect by the time Microsoft get Vista right, the new Windows system will be out with the same problems.

Bearing in mind Microsoft spent 5 years in developing Vista you would have thought that they would have got it right.

I guess I will just have to make do with out a pretty screen.

Many thanks Ken - antiques et cetera

Vista offers nothing new or innovative, yet uses vast amounts of system resources just to tick over. XP will do everything quicker, with more stability, and you wont have to replace all your software. Hopefully the horror of Vista will lead to us all using Linux eventually.

Hi,

I agree with the others, stick with XP for now.

Because of the problems people have had with it you may well find that many of your applications are not compatible with Vista.  There are also many business applications which were tested, were not stable on Vista so are still not supported to run on it by the vendors at the moment.

Vista is nice on a new high-end machine with a minimum of 2GB memory and not as bad as people say if used in a brand new hardware environment, but I don't see any reason for anyone upgrading an older macine that is running XP quite nicely - it is just asking for trouble.

Stick to XP on your Acer

Not a big fan of Vista im afraid, ive just got the Home Edition so it obviously varies to waht you guys have, but ive also got Xp on my Desktop, and its much much better than Vista in my opinion, i have certain programs that just wont work on Vista and they are fine on XP, the problems seem mainly to be with video programs player and alike, definately back up before upgrading, but if its all working fine why and your happy why bother, you will probably open a can or worms.

I run Vista business on a laptop....no problems at all. No problems with any programs or hardware.

Its M$, so as usual, throw enough memory at the OS and it`ll happily run along fine! 4GB seems to handle anything I throw at it, and silicon is rather cheap at the moment.

Transferring data is easy enough. You can use a usb2.0 to usb2.0 transfer cable (£13), Vista handles this fine or Network both computers via 100m/bit Ethernet card/Cat5 cable.

Of course XP is fully patched by now, so highly stable. So its your choice.

Hiya folks!

Having worked in software development for 15 years I've been round quite a few companies by now. It always amazes me some of the rubbish that people cobble together as an application and try and sell.

Microsoft have taken a lot of flak in the last few years over how much windows crashes when it isn't really windows at all its the shoddy programming from other companies.

With Vista they have tightened up on a whole lot of things, the OS is lots better than XP and lots more secure but this being said it makes bad applications look even worse. However there are plenty of top manufactures our there who do produce good quality work. Microsoft have made it easy through their new logo programs for companies whose software meets the standard to be recognised for it.

Our new product has earned the works for windows logo, you will be able to see it at the bottom right of the page I link to above. You can have confidence in any application that has this logo or the "certified for windows vista" logo, (which is basically a coloured version).

In order to keep these logos a company has to sign up to a set of quality testing  procedures as well as commit to fix any problems in their software by a certain date after they are found.

The certified logo is definately a better one to have but unfortunately is much more expensive to obtain. The works logo is provided for smaller companies that produce good quality software to be recognised but without having to fork over the large fees involved with full certification, (which is basically the situation my companyGeneration X Design is in).

For some extra information

here is a list of all apps that have so far earned the works logo

In conclusion I would say that unless you need to use some proprietry piece of old software then I wouldn't hesitate to buy a machine with vista on it. However I would recommend that you make sure and have 2GB RAM in it first.

Have fun!
