Wikipedia's definition of social commerce is a pretty stab at it.

My take is that all commerce is inherently social  - it's based on relationships, word of mouth referrals, tips and ultimately conversations.  In the online world, its taken a while for us to remember that doing business means more than price comparison!

Here at BT Tradespace, our goal is to bring out the social features of commerce (through communities, recommendations, ratings, social media etc.) to make doing business online more informative, and engaging for businesses and consumers a like.

Well this is a confusing area, not least in the way social networks such as facebook attempt to redefine pre-existing terms.

So, you might derive  'social capital' to mean the weath of social connections whereas social capitalism pre-exists as an economic paradigm. On Facebook itself there's currently a disagreement over two interpretations  of social advertising.

A Social Business Enterprise, is a distiction made by Dr Yunus, founder of Grameen to differentiate from a Social Enterprise, which could be a charity or or cooperative.

However, icroxford above is close to the mark in  pointing  out that all commerce is social  My organisation's founder wrote a thesis on the subjext, ie that all business in the end is about people.

That's why we call it people-centered

Another definition of this where the business basis is related to society, in this example you can consider sports clubs, various associations including professional associations.

This is where we have our business running the membership and events lists for these.

Many of them cannot afford the bigger ticket software but are run from home with a small team of helpers. This is where the web helps
