I'd like to bring your attention to a piece of BT Tradespace funtionality that I think you'll find quite valuable. The 'fan' functionality allows you to become a fan of and be 'fanned' by other BT Tradespace members, a bit like friending on Myspace or Facebook. To become a fan of a business all you have to do is go to their profile and click the button! Acquiring fans is obviously great for you online reputation, but there are some less obvious benefits for both the giver and receiver of fandom that you should be aware of.

When you fan someone you immediately become linked from their 'My Network' area, and they in turn yours. In addition when you are fanned you will appear of that profile's home page for a time. This is great chance to gain vital link equity and become much more findable by search engines. By becoming part of a network of business that you know, like, or are situated near, you also contextualise your business within a network of related business making your business more findable. On top of this, when you fan someone, they receive and email telling them and they may be inclined to fan you back!

Beware however of the pitfalls of 'fan spamming'. Getting too zealous with fanning by becoming a fan with everyone in site will lead to dilution of your network and the effect of contextualisation for the search engines. It also won't endear you to anyone!

Fanning is one of the key tools in the BT Tradespace toolkit. Used wisely can improve your online profile and make you more visible and authorotative to the search engines.Happy fanning!

  • I'm a fan of the fan functionality!

    I've been using the 'become a fan' function for a while now, on the 'old' BTTradespace (was it 'businesses we like', then?) and on the new improved BTTradespace.

    I like the feature, it's easy to use and I particularly like that it helps build up a picture of how businesses interlink; for example I have become a fan of businesses that stock my products, so people can find out about my company, read about the products I make and then build up a picture of the businesses stocking my products by looking at the BTTradespace pages I am a 'fan' of.
